Could helical clusters formed from interstellar dust be somehow alive?

I was just talking about this. I was having a hard time making my case, but this is exactly what I was saying. Here is the underlying question; What if our definition of life is fundementally wrong? What if life is about replicating and evolving energy patterns? What if it only used amino acids, RNA and DNA here on Earth because that is what was available? Read the article and think about it. The tone of the article itself is very skeptical, but read some of the comments too. It's still a worthy question.

    Food for Thought

    Excellent Article from New Scientist:
    Will designer brains divide humanity?

I like this article because of the ideas it takes for granted.
Consider some of the broader implications of what we're looking at here and I think you will agree that this is worth pondering. Also it raises that underling question; how much enhancement can we take and still remain . . . ourselves?

    "TRANSCENDENT MAN"

A documentary on Ray Kurzweil. Looks interesting but sounds a little one sided. Still let us not prejudge it. I'm looking forward to this and, of course, "The Singularity is Near" later this year.

    World to end this week?

Here is how this works, people are worried that when CERN starts it's new, super sized, super collider later this week it may spawn mini-blackholes or otherwise generate exotic paritcles that lead to the end of life as we know it. Utter hogwash.

A much more likely scenario goes like this.
Cern starts the new gizmo and after it starts building up to full power over the next several months, it will generate exotic particles that we have never seen before and answer questions about the big bang and the origin of the universe.

Of course, if you were an hostile alien civilization elsewhere in the universe (or perhaps in an alternate dimension), and you were looking for advanced civilizations that might pose a threat to you, you might be inclined to scan the known eleven dimensions for such extemly rare exotic particles.
You might futhermore be inclined to track them back to their source and deploy your mini kill bots and larger blunt bottomed, structure smashing, transformer like, civilation killer bots to crush anything larger than a two story house.

    I'm just saying is all.

Why stop there though, maybe we are on the cusp of extraterrestrial contact with a friendly, post singularity civilzation also on the look out for those self same exotic particles that only a super super collider can produce.

Maybe the good friendly aliens and the hostile aliens fight it out in some higher dimension and we get caught in the middle. Or maybe we never even know about this battle between titans.

Most probable of all though is that we'll have to keep trudging along at our current pace, just as we have been, for a little while longer at least.

    Facing Racism

Excellent article on the racism that the Obama campaign is facing behind the scenes.
    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24588813

Now let me ask a question and I'm really going to try to keep things friendly here.
In the article linked above several people express that they would never vote for a "black" person. My question is this; if you are someone who feels this way, what does that say about you?

You see, I would argue that if you really feel that you cannot vote for a person based solely on their color (or gender for that matter), that you are really quite backward and out of touch with reality. I would further argue that you are not really an American at all. This country is founded on the principle that all people should have an equal opportunity. This kind of fear based, anti-reasoning, ignorance and prejudice is not merely wrong (and it is! and you know it!) but it is also, quite simply, laughably out of date.

We have learned, on several different fronts (anthropologically, genetically, and so on) that the whole racism thing is, and always has been, a lie.
We are one species, one race; Human. Whatever our visible or cultural differences, this is the underlying truth. We are one people and this applies to all humans - everywhere.
Everything else is mere tribalism, regardless of its scale.

Do you really feel that the lives of children lost recently in China or Myanmar are somehow intrinsically of less value than the lives of children recently lost to tornadoes here in the states? Or is it only the "white" children recently lost to tornadoes here in the states? And how do you define white? Is a child's life less valuable because one of it's grandparents or great grandparents was part African or Asian. Where do Spanish or Indian or Native American people fall on your 'color to value' chart? How many generations backward do you look? (Because if you look back far enough, you're in for one hell of a surprise.) Have you ever really given any thought to your position at all? Must our country be denied an American President with outstanding character, who stands up for reason and integrity, simply because you are afraid of people who don't look enough like you?

I urge you to really think about the cost of such a world view to your own well being. What kind of person are you? What kind of person do you aspire to be? Is this really the limit of your understanding, your compassion, your humanity?

Perhaps it is not entirely your fault. Perhaps you also do not believe in evolution. Perhaps you are also against gay relationships, sex for pleasure, a womans right to her own body, and so on. Perhaps you are the victim of your local environment, caught in an echo chamber that tells you that it is acceptable to hold these views.
If that is the case, I have some bad news, you are wrong - on all counts.

You see, the world is rapidly changing and, to borrow a phrase from some popular books you may have heard of, you are the ones in real danger of being "left behind".

I urge you to reflect on these views most seriously. Consider their implications to you, and to the children in your life. Reach out beyond your current, limited experience and educate yourself as to the true nature and beauty of the world, it's people and the universe at large.

    Barack Obama

The truth, simple, direct and honest.
I do not agree with every word of this. I am not some awe struck, empty minded, fanatic for Barack; and yet I am moved by the power of this speech. When did Hillary Clinton or John McCain ever give such a speech, or in any way, demonstrate this kind of clear minded leadership and personal integrity? Where I disagree with him I nonetheless understand and respect his point of view and that gives me hope.

    Visions of the Future

    "Every day we're standing
    In a time capsule
Racing down a river from the past
    Every day we're standing
    In a wind tunnel
Facing down the future coming fast" - Neil Peart

Thoughtware.tv has part 1 of the BBC three part series hosted by Dr Michio Kaku.
I suggest watching it, mulling it over and then watching it again.
I don't agree with some of the time lines he puts forward, a lot of this stuff looks much closer to me than he seems to think it is - but that is, after all, almost entirely beside the point.
    Good stuff!

The evolution of the Neo-Human from "Waking Life"

Check out this link to a clip over at Thoughtware for a movie called "Waking Life".

    Really interesting stuff.

Watching this makes me think of some of the dreams I sometimes have like this, where I'm suddenly sitting across from someone, in a really intense conversation, with no recollection of how I go there, who they are or what's going on. In my dreams though the conversations tend to be two way and more confrontational.
