According to reports, as the firearm was pulled free, a last bit of gas escaped from the body:

Regardless of his political leanings, I will always remember Charlton Heston as Moses and The Omega Man. I look forward to "The 10 Commandments" every Passover season and reminisce fondly on his featured films on the 4:30 Movie.
